Slovenians are a nation of mountaineers. Thousands of mountaineers visit our mountains every year, there are more and more marked routes to our peaks, mountain posts and huts are increasingly visited. The vast majority of us can’t wait for that hour to strike on Friday afternoon, when we can “go” to the heights and enjoy the views and nature. But do we really know how to behave in the mountains? What is the key to not being surprised or even injured on our trip? How should we prepare for climbing our peaks? Who is responsible for mountain trails and mountain posts and huts? Do we know ourselves well enough to be able to “breathe” with pleasure to the top and enjoy the views? What to do when we have an accident? Who can be responsible? These and other questions are crucial for safe and orderly wandering in our mountains.
THE JULIAN ALPS – In the Kingdrom of Golden Horns
The Julian Alps or the Júlijci are the largest and highest mountain group in Slovenia. They are in the southern and eastern part of the Alps and represent part of the Southern Limestone Alps. They lie in northwestern Slovenia and northeastern Italy, and were named after Gaius Julius Caesar. Their highest peak, which is also the highest peak in Slovenia, is Triglav with 2,864 meters, and the second highest peak is the Italian Montaž (2,753 m). Most of the Julian Alps are included in the Triglav National Park. They are divided into the Eastern and Western Julian Alps. They measure around 4,400 km² in area (the Slovenian part measures 1,542 km²) and cover the area between the Sava Valley and the Kanalska Valley. In the south, they are bordered by Soča, Baška grapa and Jelovica, which is also part of the Julian Alps.
THE KARAWANKS – Guardians of the Alps
The Karawanks are the longest Slovenian mountains. Their ridge with the highest peak of Stol (2236 m) are towed 120 km far from Tarvisio to Slovenj Gradec. Together with the Zillian and Carnian Alps, they form the Drava mountain group. Karavanke, along with the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, form a natural dividing line between Austrian Carinthia and Gorenjska. Through Karavanke crossings, important trade routes take place between Western and South-Eastern Europe. One of them is also Ljubelj (1370 m), which is more than 300 years old and should be one of the first road passes in Europe, and the other the passage of the Seeberg-Sattel pass. Today under the Karavanke the motorway tunnel connects Ljubljana with the Villach in Austria. The tunnel was created in parallel with the original railway tunnel.
